We Spotted the Warning Before Our Client Knew There Was a Problem
The client did not call us to report a security incident. We contacted them.
Our proactive cybersecurity monitoring flagged unexpected activity on their computer. Before the client realized there was a problem, Boston PC Networking was already investigating and helping them respond.
What followed shows why proactive IT support matters.
Tracing a malicious download and remote-access threat
After an unwanted remote-access application was removed, it returned. We dug deeper and discovered another malicious remote-access agent still running on the computer.
We traced the investigation back to a specific download on September 8, 2026. A file that looked like an electronic statement was actually an installer. We pinpointed when it was downloaded and connected it to the installation of remote-access software seconds later.
That gave us a clearer picture of what needed to be addressed.
Taking action and checking the result
We removed the identified malicious agents and disguised downloads, added blocking rules on the affected computer, and verified that the known installers were blocked.
We also reported the incident to FleetDeck and ConnectWise, whose software had been misused, providing evidence and asking them to investigate and take action against the abuse.
Our support continued with help restoring everyday applications, printing, and scanning so the client could get back to their routine.
One incident. Lessons that reach further.
We used the findings to begin a wider software-blocking rollout across eligible managed client computers. That rollout is in testing before broader enforcement.
What we learn while protecting one client helps shape how we protect others. We carry those lessons into our security policies, test the improvements, and check the results.
