Local IT support stories from real client work

Technology expertise matters most when something important stops working. These anonymized examples show how Boston PC Networking has handled ransomware recovery, wireless-network design, remote monitoring, and urgent business outages for local organizations.

CLIENT STORIES

Four problems that required more than a standard checklist

Client names and identifying details are intentionally omitted. The situations, locations, technical challenges, and outcomes are based on work performed by Boston PC Networking.

Needham • Ransomware recovery

Recovering a carpet-cleaning company’s encrypted file server

The problem

A Needham carpet-cleaning company called after its file server stopped working. Initial troubleshooting showed a BIOS problem that prevented the server from starting normally. Once the BIOS was repaired and the system could boot, a more serious issue appeared: ransomware had encrypted the company’s files.

Our response

We explained the risks plainly. Communicating with a threat actor or attempting a paid recovery does not guarantee that a working decryption key will be provided, and recovered files may still be incomplete or damaged. The client understood those risks and decided that recovering the business data was important enough to attempt the process.

With the client’s authorization, Boston PC Networking handled the technical communication and negotiation, evaluated the proposed recovery path, and worked through the decryption and restoration process.

Outcome: The company regained access to its encrypted data after a server failure that initially appeared to be only a hardware or firmware problem.
Important: Every ransomware event is different. Recovery is never guaranteed, and containment, legal or insurance requirements, backup options, and business risk should be reviewed before choosing a response.
Woburn • Law-firm Wi-Fi

Building manageable Wi-Fi coverage for a law firm

The problem

A Woburn law firm needed dependable wireless coverage across its office without turning routine Wi-Fi maintenance into a recurring disruption. The network also needed to be manageable after installation rather than becoming a collection of independent access points.

Our response

Boston PC Networking designed and installed a multi-access-point wireless network and connected the access points to a secure cloud management portal. That central view makes it possible to monitor the environment, maintain configurations, and troubleshoot coverage or device issues without treating every access point as a separate system.

Outcome: The firm received consistent office coverage and an organized management platform that supports ongoing maintenance and faster troubleshooting.
Greater Boston • Managed Wi-Fi

Maintaining a specialized network with about 25 access points

The problem

A multi-floor organization needed one wireless environment to serve several very different purposes. Staff, guests, classroom users, and short-term visitors could not all share the same access rules or experience.

Our response

Boston PC Networking maintains the approximately 25-access-point network and separates traffic according to how each group uses it. The design includes a guest network, content restrictions, dedicated classroom wireless for the appropriate floor, and a portal that allows qualifying visitors to purchase a day of Wi-Fi access.

Centralized management gives us visibility across the access points while keeping the special rules for each group organized and maintainable.

Outcome: One large wireless system can support staff operations, classroom requirements, guest access, and paid day users without treating them as the same audience.
Lexington • Emergency outage

Replacing a failed network switch within hours

The problem

A Lexington small business called after losing its internet connection following a power outage. Because the outage affected normal business operations, the company needed both a quick diagnosis and a same-day path back online.

Our response

We walked the client through immediate checks and used the network management portal to inspect the equipment remotely. The evidence pointed to a failed switch rather than a problem with individual computers or the internet provider.

Once the failed hardware was identified, we located the exact replacement switch at a Boston-area store, picked it up that day, traveled to the client, installed it, and restored the network.

Outcome: The business was back online within a few hours of the emergency call, without waiting days for replacement equipment to ship.

WHAT THESE PROJECTS HAVE IN COMMON

Technical depth with a practical, personal response

We investigate the whole problem

A server that will not boot may also contain a security incident. A lost connection may be a failed switch rather than an internet-provider outage.

We explain risk clearly

Clients receive a direct explanation of the options, limitations, and tradeoffs before making a difficult technical decision.

We design for real use

Networks should reflect the people, floors, devices, security rules, and support needs of the organization using them.

We respond when timing matters

When a business is down, we look for the fastest responsible route to restore operations—not merely the most convenient next appointment.
